“Read to me,” Helen says, perched up on the kitchen counter, her stockinged legs swinging. “Read some more of that book about the girl who faked her own death to frame her husband. I like that one.”
“You would,” I say. “But I can’t. I’m cooking. See?” I hold up the knife I’ve been using to chop the courgette. It’s larger than the one I’d usually use for vegetables, but it’s beautifully curved and I like the way it feels in my hand.

Lol! I hadn’t thought about it when I wrote it, but that’s so true! Mine is a cheap little serrated one that’s the best I’ve ever had for chopping onions. 🙂
Now I want to know what the husband did to deserve that! 😬

It’s a spoilerific reference to Gone Girl (sorry if I ruined that for anyone, but hey, it’s been out for years and they’ve made a film of it. And a lawsuit.)
I really liked this, from the idea they read to each other to her fondness for her cooking gear.
Spoiler: this scene isn’t all it seems. 😉
