I always love it when the Rainbow Awards results are announced. So many wonderful books to add to the reading list! 😀
I was thrilled as all get out to see the Haunting Muses anthology win Best Lesbian Anthology / Collection
So today’s snippet is taken from my story in Haunting Muses, Dance With Me:
“Read to me,” Helen says, perched up on the kitchen counter, her stockinged legs swinging. “Read some more of that book about the girl who faked her own death to frame her husband. I like that one.”
“You would,” I say. “But I can’t. I’m cooking. See?” I hold up the knife I’ve been using to chop the courgette. It’s larger than the one I’d usually use for vegetables, but it’s beautifully curved and I like the way it feels in my hand.
Don’t forget to check out the rainbow snippets Facebook group for more little excerpts from a whole host of talented authors.

Haunting Muses
In this collection of lesbian stories, ghosts, be they actual or the metaphorical ghosts of memories, aren’t necessarily evil and hauntings may or may not be bad. How do we move beyond the foul spirits or integrate the shining beings who haunt us in the cruelest or the best ways? And how do we or our characters reconcile these ghosts into transformation and healing within present reality?
Includes stories by Sacchi Green, Deborah Walker, Pascal Scott, Bonnie Jo Stufflebeam, Elaine Burnes, Doreen Perrine and JL Merrow.
Winner of the 2017 Rainbow Awards Best Lesbian Anthology / Collection
Available in ebook and paperback: Amazon
Aw, I love the sweetness of “Read to me.”
Lol! Don’t be fooled… 😉
So they know about how a knife feels in their hand… intriguing!
That’s what I was aiming for! 🙂
Beautiful character description and development in a single snippet!
Thank you! ❤
I can relate to the knife. (I think everyone who cooks has a favorite knife.)
Lol! I hadn’t thought about it when I wrote it, but that’s so true! Mine is a cheap little serrated one that’s the best I’ve ever had for chopping onions. 🙂
Now I want to know what the husband did to deserve that! 😬
Heh, no husbands in this one! 🙂
Oh I know. I meant the one that got framed for the faked death. 🙂
*Everyone* in that book deserved all they got! 😉
It’s a spoilerific reference to Gone Girl (sorry if I ruined that for anyone, but hey, it’s been out for years and they’ve made a film of it. And a lawsuit.)
I really liked this, from the idea they read to each other to her fondness for her cooking gear.
Spoiler: this scene isn’t all it seems. 😉
Congratulations, JL. It’s a lovely fun snippet
Thanks! ❤
Oh what’s she gonna do with the knife??
Not saying! 😉
I love the realness of the dialogue here. And congrats too!
Congratulations! This is such an intriguing snippet.
