Rainbow Snippets is perfectly calm, thank you.

Today’s snippet follows almost directly on from last week’s, although in the interim we’ve established that there was no apparent reason for Mal to grab the wheel while Jory was driving…

[Jory] put the car back on course, drove along the road until he could turn up a side street, parked the car, and then turned to Mal to ask him calmly what was going on.

“What the bloody sodding hell was that?”

Okay. Maybe he wasn’t quite as calm as he’d thought.

Then he noticed Mal was shaking. “Mal?”

There was no answer. Mal just stared straight ahead through the windscreen, his eyes wide.

Jory was starting to get worried. “Mal?” he said again. “Malory?”

One Under

A Porthkennack Novel
OneUnder_500x750London Underground worker Mal Thomas is staying in Porthkennack to recover from a traumatic experience. Getting some more bad news from home is the last straw—until big, blond museum curator Jory Roscarrock steps up to offer some comfort.

A doctor of English Literature, Jory should be in a prestigious post at a top university. But a youthful indiscretion has led him to abandon academia to come back to his home town, Porthkennack, and the controlling family he’s never really felt a part of. He’s delighted to find a kindred spirit in the young Londoner.

But Jory’s family hurt Mal’s best friend deeply, and while Jory’s desperate to repair the damage, his own mistakes threaten to keep them apart. Meanwhile Mal’s torn between his feelings for Jory and his duty to his friend—and his fears that a failed relationship could be more than his shattered confidence can take.

Rainbow Snippets is feeling the cold

Here in the UK (or at least, in my corner of Hertfordshire) it’s snowing again! To make it more fun, the electricity keeps going off – given how famous we are for talking about it, we really don’t do weather at all well here!

To warm up, here’s a summer-set snippet from One Under, the second of my books in the Porthkennack shared world (the first was Wake Up Call).  Here, our heroes Jory and Mal are in a car on their way to visit Tintagel–at least, that’s the plan…

Jory’s the one driving, but he’s a little pre-occupied:

(Jory) tried to keep the conversation going, but Mal still didn’t seem keen to talk. Had he changed his mind, decided the trip was a mistake after all?

Maybe it was Jory who was the mistake. Had he been babbling on too much, reminding Mal of his hopeless crush? Maybe he should—

Mal grabbed the wheel, wrenching it violently over towards the centre of the road.

Rainbow Snippets is feeling awesome

Apparently it’s #DayOfAwesomeness today, so here’s a snippet of Tom and Phil being awesome in Plumber’s Mate Mystery #3, Heat Trap, which re-released this week.

This snippet follows on almost directly from last week’s, which had Tom about to run into a burning building, and which you can read here.

The ceiling was cracked and mottled black.

There was a loud pop, and I jumped a mile. “Jesus!”

“Light bulb.” Phil’s voice was almost drowned out at the end by a crash as debris started to fall, and I jumped again.

Bloody hell, this place was turning into a death trap. Even if we managed to get to the stairs without cremating ourselves, what were the chances they’d hold our weight?

Heat Trap – #3 in the Plumber’s Mate Mystery series

HeatTrap_500x750[5]12348067_1174925609208186_43252085009555681_n

Old flames can leave a nasty burn.

It’s been six months since plumber Tom Paretski was hit by a shocking revelation about his family, and he’s been avoiding dealing with it ever since. His lover, PI Phil Morrison, wants Tom to dig deeper into his history and try to develop his psychic talent for finding things, but Tom’s not nearly so keen. Just as he decides to bite the bullet, though, worse problems crawl out of the woodwork.

Young Devil’s Dyke barmaid Marianne has an ex, Grant Carey, who won’t accept that things are over between them, and he’s ruthless in dealing with anyone who gets in his way.  When Carey threatens an old friend of theirs, Phil and Tom step in to help—but that makes them targets themselves.

What with his uncertainty about Phil’s motives, Tom’s family doing their best to drive a wedge between them, and the uncovering of an ugly incident in Phil’s past, Tom’s not sure who he can trust—and the body he finds in the pub cellar isn’t the only thing that stinks.
