Rainbow Snippets would like to warm you up

It’s still bitterly cold and snowy here in the UK, so here’s a snippet from Plumber’s Mate Mystery #3, Heat Trap, to warm you up! 😉

Heat Trap will be re-releasing in its fabulous new cover on Monday, March 5th – but I believe if you pre-order from Riptide you’ll get it a couple of days earlier – so any moment now! 🙂

I ran round to the kitchen door and sure enough, it was unlocked. When I pushed it open, smoke billowed out and the heat hit me like a cricket ball to the head. I flung up my arm in front of my eyes and wished I’d thought to do the whole wet-rag-over-the-face thing. Too late now. Needed to find out who was in here and get them out, pronto.

I blinked rapidly, and my vision cleared. I almost wished it hadn’t.

Old flames can leave a nasty burn.

It’s been six months since plumber Tom Paretski was hit by a shocking revelation about his family, and he’s been avoiding dealing with it ever since. His lover, PI Phil Morrison, wants Tom to dig deeper into his history and try to develop his psychic talent for finding things, but Tom’s not nearly so keen. Just as he decides to bite the bullet, though, worse problems crawl out of the woodwork.

Young Devil’s Dyke barmaid Marianne has an ex, Grant Carey, who won’t accept that things are over between them, and he’s ruthless in dealing with anyone who gets in his way.  When Carey threatens an old friend of theirs, Phil and Tom step in to help—but that makes them targets themselves.

What with his uncertainty about Phil’s motives, Tom’s family doing their best to drive a wedge between them, and the uncovering of an ugly incident in Phil’s past, Tom’s not sure who he can trust—and the body he finds in the pub cellar isn’t the only thing that stinks.

If you dig up the past, be prepared for some dirt to stick.

The relationship between Tom Paretski, a cheeky plumber with a gift for finding hidden things, and PI Phil Morrison may only be a few weeks old, but already it’s under attack. Tom’s friends and family are convinced the former bully isn’t good enough for him, and they’re not shy about saying so.

Then Tom’s prickly older sister, Cherry, is poisoned at her own engagement party. Tom’s left reeling and not knowing who to suspect. Could it be her new fiancé, Gregory, a cathedral canon with an unfortunate manner and a taste for taxidermy? Or someone from her old writers’ circle, which she left after a row? Or could the attack be connected to her work as a barrister? Meanwhile, Tom’s honorary auntie’s left him a gag gift from beyond the grave that could be more significant than anyone knows.

Phil’s fighting against the clock to solve the case before somebody ends up dead. And with the poisoner hiding a dark secret, Phil’s terrified Tom could have been the target all along.

Rainbow Snippets is writing what it knows

Today’s snippet comes once again from Relief Valve, my second Plumber’s Mate Mystery, which will be out in 2nd edition on 5th February – only 2 days now!

Last week, our narrator, slightly-psychic plumber Tom Paretski, met Morgan Everton, who heads a local writers’ group. This week, Tom’s gone undercover to the writer’s group to try and suss out if any of the members was responsible for his sister’s poisoning – and Tom’s just been challenged to tell them what he writes:

“Well, it’s about this plumber, see,” I began. They always said you should write what you know, didn’t they? So that probably applied to making up stuff on the spur of the moment. “He shows up at this bloke’s house to fix the washer, and of course, the bloke’s not got any clean clothes because his washer’s kaput, so he’s just wearing a tea towel . . .” Too late, I realised I was reproducing the plot of one of Darren’s pornos. The Plumber Always Comes Twice, if I recalled correctly.

Rainbow Snippets is in a party mood

I’m off to a friend’s birthday party this evening, so I thought I’d give you a snippet from the party scene in Relief Valve, my second Plumber’s Mate Mystery, which will be out in 2nd edition on 5th February.

Here, our narrator, slightly-psychic plumber Tom Paretski, has just met Morgan Everton, who’ll be a key figure in the murder mystery that’s about to kick off. Morgan heads a local writers’ group and isn’t very complimentary about his competition:

He glared at me. “A ragtag, unschooled bunch of self-published hacks and writers of”—his voice dropped in loathing—“genre fiction.”

I decided it was probably just as well I hadn’t mentioned I liked a good thriller every now and then.

“Some of them,” he added, bending low to breathe sherry fumes right in my face, “write erotica.” His voice was husky with prurient outrage, and his face had gone as red as his trousers.

“Well, sex is all part of the human condition, innit?” I said breezily, just to see if I could bring on a stroke. “If you’re doing it right, that is.”

“Sex,” Morgan said sternly, “should not be used to titillate.”

Pressure Head Kindle edition is now available

Just a fly-by post to let you know that Amazon has resolved its issues, and the Kindle edition of Pressure Head is now (at last!) available:

Pressure Head – #1 in the Plumber’s Mate Mystery series

PressureHead_400x600.jpgSome things are better left hidden.

Tom Paretski’s not just a plumber with a dodgy hip courtesy of a schoolboy accident. He also has a sixth sense for finding hidden things. Called in by the police to help locate a body near Brock’s Hollow, he’s staggered to encounter Phil Morrison, his old school crush—and the closeted bully whose actions contributed to Tom’s accident.

Phil’s all grown up now, and Tom’s unwilling attraction to him is back with a vengeance. Phil’s now openly gay—and what’s more, he’s interested in Tom’s personal charms as well as his psychic talents. As a private investigator called in by the dead woman’s parents, Phil is sceptical about Tom’s unusual gift, but nevertheless quick to spot its potential to aid him in his work.

The further they go with the investigation, the less they can ignore their shared past, and the more the pressure and the heat build between them. But Tom isn’t certain he wants to know the secrets he’s helping to uncover, while there’s a murderer on the loose who won’t hesitate to kill again—and this uneasy couple is moving right into his sights.

Pricks and Pragmatism is out in Audio

I’m delighted to say that the first of my Southampton Stories, Pricks and Pragmatism, is now out in audiobook, narrated by Mark Steadman. So this week’s Rainbow Snippet is, naturally, taken from it:

I looked up from my Uni notes on Rakes and Libertines as Sebastian walked into the flat. He was a vision in Armani, as always, his sleek black hair allowed to grey artfully just at the temples and no further. He’d said once he thought it gave him gravitas; I’d told him I’d grab his arse any time he wanted.

I was lying on the rug in front of the mock fireplace wearing nothing but the Calvin Kleins he’d bought me. On the rug, because Sebastian would have thrown a hissy fit if I’d taken pens on the sofa; in my underwear, because there’s nothing wrong with giving a bloke something nice to look at after a hard day at the office.

I flashed him my best smile over my bare shoulder. “Hey, handsome.”

He didn’t smile back.

Southampton Stories #1

Pricks and Prag 200x300.72dpiKicked out by his father at age sixteen, English student Luke Corbin’s used to trading on his looks and charm to keep a roof over his head until he can make it big as a journalist. He goes for men with money, power and looks, in that order, and he doesn’t let emotions get in the way. But when his lover tells him it’s over, Luke finds himself homeless—just as his final exams are looming.

Moving in with geeky chemical engineer Russell may be a step down for him, but Luke can’t afford to be choosy. Fully prepared to put out as usual, Luke’s confused and frustrated when Russell refuses to take advantage of him—and even more so when he finds out Russell’s saving himself for someone special.

The more time he spends with the shy, honourable man, the more Luke finds himself bowled over by Russell’s sweetness and integrity. But just as he’s coming to terms with his own wish to be that special guy for Russell, Luke has to face facts: he’s fallen for the one man he can’t seem to charm.

Rainbow Snippets is into the Christmas Spirit

There’s something about Christmas that always puts me in the mood for historical romance and/or a Victorian mystery (I blame Charles Dickens) so this week’s snippet is taken from To Love a Traitor, which is set in 1920.

Matthew Connaught lost an arm in the Great War – but he may also have been a spy and a traitor. Our hero George (who doesn’t see himself as remotely heroic) is supposed to be investigating Matthew, but can’t help falling for his charms – to the extent that he’s accepted a friendly invitation to spend Christmas with Matthew’s family. Here they are exchanging gifts:

Tearing open the rather untidy and ill-tied brown paper, George blinked as he found a handsome Waterman pen. “I know this can’t be the same as the one that was your brother’s,” Matthew said, “but I hope it’ll go some way to making up the loss. It’s inscribed, look—‘To GJ from MC’—you see?”

George was absurdly touched. “I don’t know what to say. Thank you.” Feeling his face must surely be glowing as brightly as the coals in the grate, George produced a small package of his own, which he handed to Matthew. “I’m afraid this really isn’t very much by comparison,” he apologised.

Undeterred, Matthew eagerly untied the parcel, which George had made certain to fasten with a bow rather than a knot, and unwrapped the paper. His eyebrows rose as he saw the contents. “The Adventure of the Eleven Cuff Buttons?”

“It’s a sort of parody of Sherlock Holmes,” George said…

Matthew flicked through a couple of pages and laughed. “‘Hemlock Holmes had pulled back his left cuff, baring his tattooed but muscular wrist, just ready to take his fifth shot in the arm since breakfast’,” he read aloud, grinning.

And yes, for the curious, that is a real book, written in 1918 by James Francis Thierry (and you can find it for free online).

2017 EBook_finalist-LGWounds of the heart are the hardest to heal

Solicitor’s clerk George Johnson has a secret goal when he moves into a London boarding house in the winter of 1920: to find out if his fellow lodger, Matthew Connaught, was the wartime traitor who cost George’s adored older brother Hugh his life.

Yet the more he gets to know his quarry, the more George loses sight of his mission—and his heart. Blessed with boyish good looks and charm in abundance, ad man Matthew is irrepressibly cheerful despite having lost an arm in the Great War—and soon makes plain his attraction to George.

Matthew’s advances become ever harder to resist, and George tries to tell himself his brother’s death was just the luck of the draw, and to forget he’s hiding secrets of his own—including who he really is.

But as George’s feelings for Matthew grow, so does his desperation to know the truth about what happened that day in Ypres.  Even if it means he’ll lose the man he’s come to love.

Rainbow Snippets loves Rainbow Awards

I always love it when the Rainbow Awards results are announced. So many wonderful books to add to the reading list! 😀

I was thrilled as all get out to see the Haunting Muses anthology win Best Lesbian Anthology / Collection

So today’s snippet is taken from my story in Haunting Muses, Dance With Me:

“Read to me,” Helen says, perched up on the kitchen counter, her stockinged legs swinging. “Read some more of that book about the girl who faked her own death to frame her husband. I like that one.”

“You would,” I say. “But I can’t. I’m cooking. See?” I hold up the knife I’ve been using to chop the courgette. It’s larger than the one I’d usually use for vegetables, but it’s beautifully curved and I like the way it feels in my hand.

How do we move beyond the foul spirits or integrate the shining beings who haunt us in the cruelest or the best ways? And how do we or our characters reconcile these ghosts into transformation and healing within present reality?
